Our Caterpillars are now entering stage 3 of their lifecycle.
They are all changing into crysalides and this is happening on a daily basis.
So far we have 8 crysalides
When they change from caterpillars to crysalides they are then gently taken out of their containers and placed in the butterfly house.

We expect the butterflies to hatch within the next 8-15 days.
Keep an eye on the school blog over the next few days for new photos and some exciting videos that captured the amazing transformation from caterpillar to Crysalis.

May 10th -
The caterpillars have grown a lot since last week’s post.
They are now getting much bigger and are close to the next stage in their development when they will form their coccoon’s.
There are 33 in total spread between the Junior Infant classes. (11 in each class)
So far Mrs.Regan’s caterpillars have grown the most as they have been kept in a nice warm corner of her class.
Here are some photos of the Caterpillars taken today (10/5/2012)

This morning there was great excitement when a small frog was discovered hopping around in the Junior yard.
He managed to reach a large puddle in the corner of the yard where he stayed for a short time being observed by lots of passers by.
He was then rescued from harms way and given a new home in our school pond (thanks to the help of Eoin and Dominic in Ms.Dennan’s class)
Here are a few pictures of the frog in the classroom and in its’ new home in the pond.

The Junior Infant Classes are taking part in the Caterpillar to Butterfly project which will take place over the next few weeks in all 3 classrooms.
Our caterpillars will eventually turn into Painted Lady Butterflies.

The caterpillars arrived on Tuesday and were carefully taken out of their storage jar and moved into their new homes for the next few weeks before they
transform into butterflies.
Here is the container they arrived in (all 38 ).
After they arrived each caterpillar was placed into an individual container with special food to feed them for the next few weeks.

Next step was to place a small piece of tissue paper over the container and put the lid(with air holes) on top of the tissue paper.

Finally all the caterpillars were placed into a large box, ready to go to the Junior Infant classes.

Here are some photos of the caterpillars that were taken today. (Day 4 in the classrooms)
You can see how much the caterpillars have grown in the space of 4 short days!
